Middle-click on Tomboy Applet

UPDATE: Bug resolved with patch that adds a gconf preference defaulting to false. There is no UI to toggle this preference. The relevant key is /apps/tomboy/enable_icon_paste.

As posted to tomboy-list...

With regards to bug #359167, does anybody actually use this feature?

Most GNOME applets let you move them by middle-click-dragging. With Tomboy, when you middle-click on the applet (or notification icon), any text in the clipboard is pasted to the Start Here note, which is opened for you. I don't think this is documented anywhere.

Would you care if this feature went away?

Personally, I never use the Start Here note, so I'm probably not qualified to judge whether or not it is a useful feature.

Standard behavior, please! It's what makes GNOME great.

More important is to get all the Mono crap and bloat out of GNOME and off the distros install CDs.

@ian: Agreed. We're probably going to make it an optional behavior that defaults to 'off', because now some people on the list are proclaiming their love for it. :-)

@stoffe: Thank you for the helpful comment? You probably need to talk to your distro or to the GNOME release team. Tomboy is always going to require Mono, so I can't really help you.

Well, since I had no idea that Tomboy could do that, I guess I won't miss it too much ;)

@stoffe: I cannot acuratly express how sick and tired I am of the "Mono is crap/MS-owned" comments over the past year. Start your own distro, take it out, then find a good open source note taking system or photo manager not based on Mono. (Good luck)

Not using Tomboy (not enough memory i think), but you should document this interesting feature. We can argue this is a "standard feature" because middle button usually paste the current selection.

I am not sure which feature you are trying to describe as being default - but if its moving to be the middle mouse moving the note - that was one of the things that pissed me off about sticky notes. There is a title bar... use it. Seriously - if you want to call for "standard" behaviour, middle mouse clicking in text entry areas in Linux has been pretty standard for *pasting* PLEASE keep it this way.

@steev: We're on different pages here. I'm talking about middle-clicking the applet itself in the panel (or the tomboy icon in the notification area if you run it that way).

This is not about middle-clicking the text area of a note to paste content into that note.

I don't use it because the text go to this Start Here note. However, I think I have suggested this somewhere in some BTS, it might be intuitive if this goes to The Note of the Day, if this addin is enabled.
